Autonomous drone

For a full academic year I led a twelve-person engineering team building an autonomous quadcopter from the ground up, covering the mechanical build, the flight control, the onboard vision system, decryption algorithms, wireless charging and data transfer, all tied together behind a web dashboard that let anyone fly the drone from a browser. Our team was able to complete each one of the milestones and with a final score of 19/20 we were awarded the best team of the year.

Autonomous flight

Onboard control loop flies to waypoints and lands without any manual inputs.

Image recognition

A downward camera detects and decodes QR markers to fix the drone’s position over the grid.

Wireless charging & data transfer

After landing the drone powers a LED strip and transfer flight data wirelessly using phase-shift key modulation over the charging coil. This data is then displayed on the LCD screen.

Web control

A browser dashboard streams telemetry and sends height, waypoint and landing commands live.

Honours Programme

Alongside my degree I take part in the KU Leuven Honours Programme, an additional research track running next to the regular curriculum. My first project studies the impact of various data types on neural network performance.
